Last time @ STEAMology: Engineering with STRAWBEES!

Wait...What are STRAWBEES?

STRAWBEES are colorful, key-shaped bits of recycled plastic designed to link straws together to create three-dimensional structures. Each piece has a notched flat end, which you can insert into a quarter-inch plastic straw, and a circular head, which acts as a connector and pivot point for multiple straws and pieces.

How It Went

Seriously, how fun is this theme? I love showing the awesomeness of architecture and how things work. Giving the kids freedom to create and imagine took a little time to start.  Stawbees really do need their own straws.  We discovered you really had to push on regular dollar store straws to get them to fit the Strawbees.

I think most of the kids didn’t even have a plan, they just started mixing and matching the pieces until it took on its own form.  Of course some of the boys made weapons, but most were going for “bigger is better”.  This would be a great open ended activity for a No School Day event.
